Without interpretation, the sparrows dart from tree to tree, the branches sway gently in the breeze, the seagull coasts through the summer sky. Beyond thought, the surfer carves along the surface of the wave, the mountain climber pulls themself up to the next resting point, and the dancer dances in unison with the beat and the rythm of the cosmos. As the sun begins to emerge above the horizon, the rolling earth presents us with a new morning. Arising from sleep, the sun is met with new born eyes. This greatest gift brings joy and serenity to one. As eyes engage with the lightening sky, there is motion but not time. The new day is the beginning of a thousand days, the sun counts not the earthly years. Immeasurable Perception No.1 in western red cedar was carved down to final shape with hook knives for the inner concavities. Working with the best grain direction accessible in any given area, shavings are removed while the piece is held carefully in the lap. The sharp blades carve through the fibres, leaving clean surfaces sparkling in the lamplight. To finish the piece, sandpaper was used to smooth and refine all surfaces bringing the piece together into a cohesive whole. The block consisted of three pieces of cedar cut from the same board for consistency in grain and appearance. The endless beauty of The rolling waves, The quaking leaves, The warbler's song— The end of time, Of space— Motion as life. MS2020
