ALCHEMY was a site specific installation for Sydney’s Sculpture by the Sea exhibition in 2009. Based on the natural occurrence of highly reflective rock pools along the coastal walk, Alchemy merges the natural and the artificial in a celebration of the changing forms of the rock shelf. A series of 21 organically shaped steel mirrors were created to fit within a series of contours along the coastal rock shelf, revealing reflections of the sky and the changing effects of light and weather during different times of day. The mirrors ranged from 0.3mø to over 3.7m in length, designed to both amplify and blend with the changing environment, rather than being a decorative insertion. The result was a surreal landscape of reflections constantly changing in colour and texture. This work explores the relationship of built materials to nature, using a single material to realise the concept. The work explores the possibility to connect with naturally occurring phenomena through public installation and an experimentation with materials.
