the menadas were described as being in a state of ecstasy and frenzy, due to a combination of dance and drunkenness. In this state they lost their self-control, began to scream excitedly, engaged in uncontrolled sexual activities. The menadas were in Roman mythology the nymphs that raised Dionis.
