This work is a hybrid of painting and relief sculpture, formed from offcuts of wood, some geometric and some organic or biomorphic in shape, which have been arranged and painted. I wanted to try and translate some of the ideas used in my painting into three dimensions, and to experiment with found materials and the process of assemblage. The work is created intuitively through a process of layering, reconfiguration, and re-painting until a kind of resolution is achieved.
Through the relationships between the various elements within the work hints of narrative or representation may emerge.

Born 1981 in Suffolk, England. Currently based at Cuckoo farm studios, Colchester. I am instinctively drawn to abstraction in art because of the freedom it implies, and my work is influenced in particular by the formal experimentation of 20th century abstract painting and sculpture. The use of repeated motifs and a multi layered, modular approach to image making create a sense of narrative within the work. I tend to work intuitively without a clear idea of where each piece will end, preferring to let the process itself direct the finished form of the work.
