About The Artwork

I have been working with the Astronaut motif now for over 25 years, amongst other things. The body of work reads like a long epic voyage as much through inner space as any out one. As a small boy I watched the Moon Landings, and what really struck me was the sheer immensity of all of what lies beyond. I’ve also been struck by the word’s of the traveller himself, Buzz Aldrin and William Shatner. « Awe » is a much over used word these days, but there is nothing of that feel about the description of vastness looking back at that tiny blue jewel, beaming out of the void. So the sculpture has these elements, the small cherub like being, slightly humorous but also vulnerable as we are as a species teetering on the edge. There’s the iconic like sheen, an effervescence in the silver apparition, beaming blue and gold - hope but a warning too - this blue is the only blue we have and we must surely guard it well or we shall lose it forever.

Originally born in the Highlands of Scotland, I spent my childhood between there and Perthshire. The influence of the the North West runs particularly strongly in my paintings and also serves as a backdrop for many site specific 3 D work too. Originally my training was in sculpture and I spent the earlier part of my career Working on a commission and Residency Basis In The Public Art Field. Wood was my preferred medium for a number of years, particularly carving on a large scale before I diversified into painting, photography, installation and laterally bronze casting. There is a natural interplay of all these disciplines with each one informing the other. From 1999 to 2016, I worked as a Part - time Tutor at Edinburgh College of Art, leaving that position to concentrate more exclusively on my own free lance pursuits, combined with more extensive travel.
