Starting out as a trained blacksmith metalworker and now full-time sculptor, James began his artistic journey at a young age, creating sculpture from surplus materials from large ornamental ironwork projects. Following various trips to Paris - and witnessing artworks by masters such as Rodin, Michelangelo, Bernini, Claudel and Bugatti - he became hooked on the idea of creating striking figurative sculpture with a contemporary flair, using both traditional and unorthodox media. Choosing to forego formal art training, James enjoys the challenge of understanding complex anatomy and translating it into dynamic and thought provoking works in a subject that has been, and is still is, revered in the world of sculpture. The ethereal style of his work aims to showcase the fragility of the human body and mind in modern society. James continues to work at his home studio in Kingsbridge (Devon) sculpting and casting new works with steel being a preferred medium, appealing to collectors internationally.
