About The Artwork

The solemn second part to Azazel’s dramatic story is classically styled and sculpted in this bronze. Once the most beautiful and brightest of all the Angels, Azazel is now vanquished by the Lord. His punishment for defying the laws of heaven, Azazel was cast into a pit in the earth bound and hung upside-down like a sacrificial goat until judgement day. In this sculpture we witness Azazel’s ascension to heaven. Disgraced, he returns to the light from the depths of the earth. Following a suitable length of time the Lord has taken pity on his formerly favoured Angel and forgiven him. Azazel, clothed in a pair of wings fashioned from rope, wood and griffon vulture feathers. One wing strapped to his back the other held in his hand and trailing behind. We witness the once great Angel humbled now regaining poise as he ascends after his catastrophic fall from grace. Inspired by stories from the Book of Enoch and ancient tales from Mesopotamia referencing a race of people who were far more sophisticated and technologically advanced than the indigenous tribes. Barry Ormond brings us another wondrous creation. This statue reflects the artist’s ability to share and bring to life important stories from a bygone era. It excites the mind and sets us off on our own journey of discovery. Where did we come from? The story of the fallen Angels and Azazel is truly remarkable and deserves our consideration in order to understand the achievements of mankind in its infancy. Earth was an inhospitable place in 10,000 BC but despite this our race overcame the harshest of natural phenomena to evolve the species at a rate that anthropologists remain intrigued by. Did we have help? Was need the only catalyst? Mesopotamia known as the “Cradle of Life” home to many ancient city-states provides us with an exciting historical map to explore and reflect upon. The Akkadians, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Kurds, the Sumerians and the Yezidis all have stories in their mythology of Gods descending to earth and teaching them the arts of civilisation. Barry Ormond’s sculpture asks us to look back in time, take stock of a place, its people and history through the eyes of the Angel Azazel who felt we were worthy of his compassion. My interests have always been varied but consistent throughout my life. Raised in Ireland my view of the World has been from a small but magical place. If you want to get to know me, please allow my sculpture to do the talking. Quiet contemplation sets the mind off, ideas start to form. I look to natural history, mythology, religion and romance, from there the hands take over and creation begins.
