The Russian Wolfhound (Borzoi) is a graceful, gentle companion with a royal appearance. No other canine has such an intricate, individual coat and such a compelling appearance.

As with most of my works, I prefer the overarching style to be abstract, with just enough realism to invite you in, but to also let you make it your own, perceptually.

My borzoi, Starry Night, who died suddenly and much too young, inspired the piece.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The Russian Wolfhound (Borzoi) is a graceful, gentle companion with a royal appearance. Few other canine breeds have such an intricate, individual coat and such a compelling appearance. The Borzoi is a large, slender breed who loves the cold but also the comfy, blanketed couch. And of course, their human family counterparts, so long as they are kind. I'm inspired by nature, especially by animals. Although sometimes I do give in to the temptation toward literal depictions, generally my works are not meant to be exact representations but creative tellings instead.

Artist's Statement: Aesthetics Tell the truth, but tell it slant. The truth must dazzle gradually.                        – Emily Dickinson I like to work in a somewhat slant mode; through a slightly abstracted rendering, both the subject of the work and the work's viewer are recognized as the individual beings they are, in flux and replete with potential. My work is an invitation to the viewer to come to their own interpretation while considering the possibilities of the subject's world as well. For me, a slant approach to art opens access to more dialogical forms of communication. Outside the artistic realm, I work in animal advocacy, which is often stressful. For balance, I find calm in making these sculptures, where all that is required is to simply present a rendering that others might appreciate. * The essence of sea anemones, jellyfish, and other ocean life seems to me an always-evolving marriage of toughness and delicacy. Although anemones & jellies seem fragile, handling one can induce a powerful sting. Whether in self-defense or offense, they teach us that not all is as it seems. The captivating beauty of sea life is undeniable, and it’s no surprise that people sometimes wish to keep that beauty close. Sculpture offers an artistic way to do so, while respecting the natural life of the subject. Anyone who has ever lived with a dog knows that as a species, they are among the most open, responsive creatures on the planet. My work in dog rescue, trauma rehabilitation, and animal protection is part of my history for their sake. I see my art as not just creative self-expression, but also as another way to serve animals by re-presenting them. Brief Bio: Rain Jordan's first sculptures were original bronze made through the lost wax method, but she enjoys the immediacy and flexibility that other 3D approaches offer. Her latest sculptures are composed of various materials: clay, wire, and often recycled or upcyled vintage glass, stone, or other materials. Rain's work is held in private collections in New York, California, Oregon, Australia, and elsewhere. Rain holds a BA and an MFA from the California State University. Rain is also an author, essayist, and certified canine behavior professional. Websites:
