About The Artwork

Inspired by indigenous wood carvings, the sculpture "boy with mobile phone" was carved with a chainsaw and chisels from an antique wood beam that was left in an old barn. The sculpture in its appearance is rough and primitive. The child is nude to reflect the feeling parents have when their child is surfing the World Wide Web, vulnerable and unprotected to possibly unsuitable content. The boy is so hooked to his phone, he won't take his eyes off it and won't go outdoors, hence the colour pink for his skin. The mobile phone is spray painted in gold to reflect the value that the device has to the boy. The idea of the sculpture also translates to our digitalised world, where almost every human is connected to some kind of digital platform.

London born and Swiss bred Interior Designer and Artist, Peter Smith is currently working and living in Switzerland. Most of his work has an urban London influence having lived there whilst he studied and graduated in Interior Design and where he discovered his love for street art and graffiti. "I really enjoy the physical act of spray painting an object, the quick pace and the free movement. I love using bold and bright colours and statements in my art, I guess inspired by many other street artists around the world. When I make sculptures I get the same uplifting sensation; again, it's the physical act of using a chainsaw or hammer and chisel on a piece of wood and turning it into a rough, almost primitive sculpture, yet with a relevant 21st century twist. The sculptures however are mostly influenced by my global travels, where I had amazing experiences staying with tribes and indigenous peoples and admiring their art".
