ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I started out with wanting to create a group of people in harmony… but then the wood called for a break and I decided to communicate something different and broke it apart. There is a sharp cut between the two pieces. My thought was that sometimes it is better to break unstable things apart. Especially when they are destructive. To then, maybe be able to grow back together and find healing. The 2 pieces symbolise this separation. One can choose how close they are to be at the exact moment. This can vary, depending on the situation. This piece is carved from a very old olive tree trunk. All my sculptures have been treated with a beeswax- terpentine mixture and polished.

I am inspired by trees and the way they relate to each other, often finding similarities with the human world and making associations to interactions between people. Trees are symbols of strength and calmness, growth and the interconnectedness of everything. The process starts by choosing a piece of wood to work WITH and then let it decide which direction to go first. It often is an intuitive process where I slowly start to see the figure and am able to free it from the trunk by using hammer and chisel. It is a long process and full of surprises. One never knows what is hidden inside. Wood can be challenging and hard but at the same time inspiring and soft. I have chosen to work with wood because it is alive and forces one to adapt and evolve continuously.
