About The Artwork

"Covid Pestsaule 2020" is inspired by the Great Plague Column, or Pestaule, located in the inner city of Vienna, Austria. This Baroque memorial in Vienna was erected after the Great Plague epidemic in 1679. It is one of the most well-known and prominent sculptural pieces of art in the city. My "Covid Pestaule" is a commemoration of our current "plague" -- the Great Covid epidemic of 2020. I crafted it out of mesquite wood, cactus thorns, clay and oil paint. This work offers a reflection on the devastation wrought by this modern pandemic virus.
