"Covid Warrior" is an abstract tabletop sculpture. Made of welded sheet metal and rebar that has been painted with acrylic paints and then sealed with a protective coating. We designed and fabricated this piece while sheltering in place in our studio during the Covid 19 virus outbreak and the piece stands as an expression of our collective strength and resiliency against this virus as we all work to stay safe.

We are a husband and wife team, collaborating on projects since 1980. We started our journey in celluloid, making short experimental films about the human condition, that showed in film festivals and classrooms throughout the United States, Canada and Australia. During this time we worked professionally within the motion picture industry. After a decade working in film, we wanted to reach people without the need for a darkened room, and to create a body of work that was both tangible and functional. Still wishing to have our artwork inspire people to see the world in a new way and think outside the box, we took to making sculptural art furniture and furnishings, out of wood, metal and other mixed media. Cabinets fit together like lockets, while bending and swaying in a dance of life; simultaneously illustrating our individual uniqueness as well as our interdependence on each other as a community. By the new millennium we had taught ourselves to weld and were concentrating mainly on outdoor sculptures made of steel. Working in steel allowed us to better illustrate both the fragility and strength of the human condition, which had always been a central theme in our work. Most of our pieces incorporated the use of bright, bold colors, while others included large expanses of stainless steel that had been burnished in a way that interacted with the light, creating the effect of rhythm and motion, as well as depth, allowing the viewers to look into the soul of the piece. Our latest change of mediums has found us segueing into painting. While we are continuing to work in both abstract and abstract figurative styles, incorporating humor, and making use of bright bold colors, our current expression is acrylic paint on canvas. Motion, emotion and vibrancy, remain the constant themes.
