ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have given full expression to my desire to release and discharge pent-up energy in Disembogue #18. I have infused these panels with a riot of motion and colour, aiming to capture the many synonyms of the word “Disembogue.” In this piece, you will find that words such as “emanate,” “empty,” “emit,” “exhale,” “expend,” “exude,” “pour,” “radiate,” “spill,” and “transmit” have all been portrayed.

Postmodern art has a fixation on absolute contrasts; photography and painting, abstract and representation, and conceptual and practical. My study is a dismantling of these conventional categories through the integration of elements found within sculpture, painting, and photography. The sculpted canvases are handmade and unique to each artwork. The structural forms fragment the frame and instill movement, disrupting the conventional geometric configuration of wall-mounted artwork. Each piece is a deconstruction of the surrounding environment, as the structural form of the canvas abstracts the natural lines within. My investigation into the tradition of Canadian art, the unadulterated beauty of the physical world, and resonating passing memory, results in an attempt to communicate the grandeur and fragility of nature. I have studied in Banff School of Fine Arts and have a four year diploma in Fine Arts (1978) and a four year diploma in Graphic Design (1983) from Ontario College of Art (presently OCAD University). My last year of the Fine Arts program was spending in Florence, Italy studying under Canadian Figurative Artist Tom La Pierre.
