Disha - The Direction Intricate patterns are laser cut on paper. These shapes are hand assembled into beautiful three dimensional sculptures. This piece has 15 sheets of laser cut paper arranged into 8 distinctly separated layers. The separation of layers brings in a three dimensional effect. It also paves way for play of shadows. Color palette is only Black and White - so that the focus is on the design and not on the colors. The papers used are Acid Free and hence ensures longevity. The main art piece is size 270mm x 270mm and 27mm thick. This mandala is inspired from an ancient Sanskrit Verse from the holy book "Rig Veda". The verse is "Ano Bhadra Krutavo Yantu Vishwatah" meaning "Let noble/auspicious thoughts come to me from all directions of the Universe". The mandala itself is designed in the form of a compass which has 4 hands instead of two. The border has markers in the 8 cardinal directions with their respective sanskrit names. Udichi (North), Avachi (South), Prachi (East), Pratichi (West), Eshani (North-East), Vayavya (North-West), Agneya (South-East) and Nyrutya (South-West). Let this Mandala usher in Noble Thoughts and through them, Auspiciousness, to your homes from all the 8 cardinal directions. Size mentioned is the size of actual art work without any mount and frame. Minor changes in design, size and color of the frame is possible as it is not made by me and will be done post receiving the order. Art work will be supplied along with Frame.

I am a paper artist based out of Hyderabad, India. I have always been fascinated by paper - for painting on it as a kid. But as i grew, I started looking at paper as a medium not just for painting. I have worked with paper starting with Origami, then with Kirigami and later on with Pop Up Art. Finally, when i started doing layered paper art, i got hooked. Almost all paper art forms i tried delves into bringing in an additional dimension to the two dimensional paper. Layered paper art was so simple and yet so beautiful. I design intricate shapes which are laser cut on paper. These cut shapes are later hand assembled into various layers separated and / or stuck to each other. This helps in bringing out the design more effectively and adding a three dimensional effect to the whole art work making it into a paper sculpture. Varying the viewing angle and the direction of light brings in dramatic effects to the same artwork. I have always been very proud of my culture and my roots. Going through various art works globally I always felt that Indian culture was not represented enough in art works. The motifs, symbols and architectural patterns found in temple art, saree art, Mandalas and Yantras are all wonderful art waiting to be explored. I try to bring them out in my art works.
