About The Artwork

This work is inspired by a linoleum cut of a grasping claw I made for Hallowanus, an annual fundraising party we hold at Gowanus Studio Space in Brooklyn. The theme that year was Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I interpreted the theme rather loosely and came up with this claw which is meant to be a sort of stock horror movie image. I have wild-posted the claw in Brooklyn in recent years and incorporated it into other images and projects. There is something about the movement in the image that viewers seem to like, and it lends itself to many interpretations, although at heart it is meant to be fun. I chose to work in linocut because it is a very graphic, expressive and immediate medium. This work is composed of two linocut prints collaged together on baltic fir plywood, with several inserts which reverse the color. The work is meant as an extension of the street art I post; gritty, raw, showing the touch of the maker's hand. It's collaged onto board so that it can be touched, rather than sealed behind glass. This piece is part of a series of 6 variations on this theme, including the original which is composed of newsprint collaged onto 3/4 MDF.
