ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Emily Davison was inspired by the sacrifice that Emily showed by throwing herself under the King's horse in the 1913 Derby at Epsom Racecourse in order to bring attention to the cause of votes for women. I do not attempt to reproduce the incident literally, the swirling paint and the lean of the running horse is enough to engender the profundity of the incident. This event is only now being commemorated with a statue on the Downs at Epsom. The horse involved Anmer who survived the impact is seldom if ever mentioned. I hope to redress this imbalance with this work. It is made of found materials and oil paint. No animlas were harmed in the making of this work. This piece has been awarded a highly commended at Imagine Falmouth 2019

I make work about the division, opposition and collusion between animals and humans. Oil painting, drawing, assemblage, collage and the re-use of materials and objects are central to my work. Painting selected for the 171 RWA Open exhibition 2024, I won the Ovalhouse prize at Chelsea College of Art, and Gloucester University prize at the Open West. I was on the committee of the Newlyn Society of Artists for 6 years. I have exhibited in Berlin and Baku, Zdonov in the Czech Republic, London, Exeter and Birmingham and I am represented by Daisy Laing, Penzance. My work is in private collections in Hong Kong, USA, France, Italy, Germany and the UK.
