The wren in our garden has had it's nest above the sunroom door in an artificial swallow nest. They fill up the nest with moss and once the babies are there they search for spiders and other insects in walls and corners. Our garden is as bird an animal friendly as possible, they can nest everywhere and eat everything. I have been a birdwatcher and a bird lover ever since I was a kid. Having collected sea glass, fossils, shells and driftwood for most of my life, I never knew what to do with the driftwood. Till my neighbor decided to take down his old barn. I noticed all the beautiful old wood he was throwing away. I could take whatever I wanted and decided to make small birds out of it. Then the driftwood came in handy as a base for them to sit on. Inspired by old decoy ducks ad Inuit animal carvings I make my birds as basic as possible while showing their characteristics and special behavior. I like the fact that besides paint and the eyes, I can find and reuse all kinds of materials. From reclaimed wood, boat parts, old furniture and parts of chopped down trees, there is art in all of it. I make everything by hand after the first rough cutout and being outside sanding while listening to the birds is such a joy.

Fionna ia a Dutch artist who lives in an old farmhouse with a huge garden, that is as animal friendly as possible to attract all kinds of wildlife. They are the inspiration for her work, from the barn owls in the shed, to the rookery in the small forrest, the song birds that come steal sunflower seeds from the chickens, the hedgehogs at night and the newts in the ponds. She has an art degree in nature illustration and she always starts out with some simple sketches of the bird she is going to make. She uses recycled wood and collects driftwood at every beach she goes and often has to check in an extra suitcase to bring home the best pieces. Her goal is not to make a realistic copy of a bird but to catch their characteristics and their behavior in a very basic way, like in old decoy ducks and Inuit carvings. After using a jigsaw for the rough first cut out she does everything else by hand. Sitting outside sanding a piece of wood and listening to a blackbird or watch a squirrel collect walnuts is an absolute joy.
