ABOUT THE ARTWORK

FRANZ THE FROG from the series: TROPHIES Memories of a childhood. Roaming the woods freely, aimlessly and independent of time. Collecting finds – childhood treasures – arranged and caringly sorted in boxes, or buried. Wild animals and fabulous creatures are personified and named. Everything has a soul. Making imaginary friends with animals that can speak. The fantasy world of the child mixes with reality. Growing up with collections of hunting trophies in the homes of neighbouring farmers and hunters. The sight of the dead taxidermized animals, starring at the child through their glass eyes, is disconcerting, awe-inspiringly mystical and magical all at once. The sadness about life being taken and about being held captive in a taxidermized body manifests itself in memory. Textile interventions on found, taxidermized, animals. plastic art | textile art | mixed media | sustainability in art lives and works in Vienna, Austria Born 1973 in Judenburg, Austria Holding a degree in architecture, she established her internationally acclaimed fashion label STEINWIDDER in 2002, focussed on the conceptual refashioning of textile waste and second-hand clothes for 15 years. Since 2014 Anita Steinwidder creates three-dimensional mixed media artworks that show the continuation of her artistic language. Her inspiration comes from her intense involvement with the finds: found objects relating to her rural origin, as well as other items that correspond to her very unique meaning of something being “valuable”. She reassigns meaning, form and function of these found objects by means of creative intervention and places them in a new conceptualized context.
