About The Artwork

Study taken from a life model. Truly a one-off as the 'fault lines' were a happy accident during the glaze firing process so impossible to recreate. (There is therefore a necessity to be wary of sharp edges.) Reminiscent of classical sculpture, this piece has a modern edge due to the glaze used whilst the gold effect painted along the fault lines brings to mind the japanese art of kintsugi, where broken ceramics are fixed with a golden lacquer. On this occasion however, the breaks are still there, suggestive of how we might attempt to hide our own faults from others with varying degrees of success.

Working under the moniker EJ Mack, I am a ceramic sculptor based in London, England. Born in Australia, I have lived in the UK since a very young age and was educated here. I discovered a love for sculpture and in particular, clay art, through a degree in History of Art which in turn led to an enrolment in Sculpture Life Classes at The London Fine Art Studios in Battersea, under the tutelage of Scott Pohlschmidt, where I continue to study today. My sculptures are created, fired, and glazed by my own hand and each piece is an original. I am currently working on a collection of animal heads, known as ‘The Ark’, each with their own distinct personality and which carry with them a substantial weight and presence. Running alongside this is the MOL(10) Series – smaller relatives of ‘The Ark’ finished in a molten-metal effect glaze. ‘Supra Naturam’ in contrast is largely influenced by the human physique whilst taking on an appearance outside of our natural world. All of my work can be viewed online via my website at www.studioejm.co.uk. I happily accept commissions and am also willing to recreate any of my works in an alternative size or finish, however as each work is handmade no two will ever be the exactly the same.
