Dominique Ganiage is a french artist. She lives and works in Paris, but has traveled a lot and spent few years in Africa. Dominique Ganiage's approach stems from a need: to sculpt by creating from nothing. Clay is her preferred material, both for this reason and for its plasticity, its direct connection to the earth and its powerful forces, its essential nature, and its Promethean dimension. Her work is marked by the enduring trace of the work, the energy of the initial creative impulse, and the interplay of shadow and light. It refuses to be smooth, reflecting a world that is anything but, harsh yet also human. It belongs to the modernist tradition, between expressionism and minimalism, with an organic dimension that resonates with the worlds of Bourdelle and Ousmane Saw. It is driven by a desire to get to the heart of the matter and to find the profound traits that underpin the work and give it life. Her work is permeated by a dual tension between strength and sensitivity, power and emotion. After initially focusing on the body, her practice expanded to include faces and portraits, then landscapes, rocks, and fossils, not to mention a recurring theme of felines. She leaves the clay raw, sometimes fired at high temperatures, or uses pigments, waxes, and patinas to color it.
