There are about 100 trees at our place, many of which I have moved, planted or started from seed. I care for them by careful pruning and in the process am rewarded by an endlessly inspiring sculpture material. When a storm blew over thousands of trees in southern Illinois, I salvaged several burls, along with a portion of the trunk where they were attached. Burls, whose exact cause is unproven, appear to be cancerous growths on otherwise healthy trees. The process of making my "Shell Series" involves removing decayed material and filling any empty pockets with epoxy putty. Several coats of acrylic paint are applied and each is sanded smooth to reveal part of the previous color. While the inside is exhaustively carved, sanded and smoothed, the reverse side is left largely unworked beyond the careful removal of bark. The exterior is then dyed and finished with tung oil. This process produces the interior/exterior contrast found in seashells.

Much of my practice includes collecting and preparing wood from local trees. When I began this process years ago, the material came from friends or neighbors who cut down trees and offered the wood to me. Now I have many trees on my property that may drop large branches. Most require careful and regular pruning. Recently I was forced to take down a sugar maple that was rotting from the inside out. This provided me with a considerable amount material that is dense and quite excellent. It also provided much of the material used to make “Red Fence.” The scroll form in the piece was made with wood I saved from pruning pear trees some years ago. I’d like to think that my work functions like poetry, except it uses forms instead of words to evoke thoughts and feelings that lie deep and barely realized.
