Karin Hodes was born and raised in Delden, Twente in the East of Holland. Design and architecture have been very much part of her from an early age, the daughter of a building contractor she was often to be found with her nose in the latest design magazine. 'I was always busy with design and drawing.'' Through her work in home and garden design Karin came across glass as an art medium. The challenge was not to follow the already well beaten path but to discover the boundaries and possibilities of the materials and techniques. Karin's architectural roots can clearly be seen in her works. Sleek lines define the shapes and compositions which often contain their own sense of movement. Her work has its own individual identity. Making use of her unique feel for design and colour Karin's works have included wall decoration, sculptures, bowls and jewellery created for both business and individual commissions. Many of her works have already found a place in homes, offices and public buildings. Karin appeared as one of only 73 recognized worldwide glass artists in the recently published American book "Best of Worldwide Glass Artists." In 1992 Karin began acquiring different techniques in glass art. Since 1999 she has lived and worked in Diepenheim, also in the east of Holland, where she continues her work in glass fusion. After the process of melting the intricately cut pieces of glass a pattern is formed using one of Karin's homemade molds. This creates various forms and shapes from the originally flat plate. "In everything I see I always verify the design and proportions are right. Symmetrical or even asymmetric. I live in the middle of a forest and have visited Asia several times. These are naturally beautiful inspirations, actually I find inspiration everywhere. All my emotions I put into the glass." Shape and form wander continually through her mind. She works out her ideas on paper and after having established colours they determine to the nearest millimeter the placement of each individual colour of glass. Glass is a technically complicated medium with each colour having a different melting point and result making it difficult to maintain clean lines and shapes during the process. Through her experience, continued experimentation and most of all her high level of concentration and accuracy Karin fully controls the results. For that reason she makes no concessions and uses only the best fusion glass available (Bullseye).
