Jolanda gets her inspiration during long walks in the dunes and on the beaches of the North Sea close to her living place: the bark of old oaks, bent by the dominant western storms, the traces of man and animal in the sand, the shells and stones polished by the sea. And in her holidays in the mountains of France, she finds fossils, beautiful cobblestones and huge rock strata, spectacularly pushed upwards by the powers of the earth crust. With her technique she can express her fascination for those natural weathered surfaces that carry the marks of time, and the huge forces of earth, wind and water: pushing, cracking and lifting. She sees a parallel in the aging of humans: the smooth supple bodies of the youth, getting weathered, dry and wrinkled with age. In 2010 she is invited for the first time in China to take part in an exhibition with teapots: ‘The 2nd Shanghai International Modern Pot Art Biennial Exhibition’. In 2016 she participates for the 4th time; as an artist and as juror of the selected works. In 2014 and 2016 she is a finalist in the ‘Taiwan International Gold Teapot Prizes’ in the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum.

I was born in The Hague, Netherlands in 1952. Since 1991 I exhibit my ceramic work on a regular base. My work is on display in private collections, galleries and museums in the Netherlands and abroad (e.g. United Kingdom, Taiwan, South Korea and China), and has been featured in several publications. Most of my work is wheel thrown with sculpted elements. The inspiration comes from weathered surfaces: layers in rock formations, cracks in dried river beds or gnarled tree bark. It needs great skills on the potter’s wheel to turn these textures into clay. Matte, rough glazes, fired at high temperatures finish off my work. The addition of elements such as hand sculpted branches or steles, or the use of gold lustre makes every piece unique. In 2020 I was awarded with a bronze prize for my exhibit in the 8th Taiwan International Golden Teapot Competition and Exhibition. I received a bronze award for my work "Fruit of Sedimentary Rocks" at the 1 st China Changchun "Yatai Lotus Mountain Prize" International Ceramics Contest 2019. I received the oeuvre prize for my work in 2018 from the Fund ArtiBrak Foundation in Voorburg. For more than 30 years teaching ceramics has been an important part of my work. The last 8 years as a teacher at the Ceramics Training Institute of the Netherlands (NKO) in Gouda.
