ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sculpture: Fiberglass, Resin, Textile on Other. Red Cape is a part of my diploma work named Once Upon a Time. In this project, I focused on reinterpreting gender roles and stereotypes using children’s literary sources, and playfully reflected negative social conventions with my distinctive sculptural voice. I created a cape that is actually empty, missing the body, leaving space for viewers ideas about what exactly should be under the cape. I was inspired by Carl Gustav Jung´s texts about archetypes. Feathers, birds, airplanes and all that refers to flying or height are part of this complex of symbols which emphasizes the upper heavenly realms. In addition, all imagery involving light or illumination pertains to the masculine principle as opposed to the dark earthiness of the great mother. Because of that I chose to use feathers as a part of my sculpture, representing masculinity. I used epoxy resin, fiberglass, textile.

Nikola always dwelt on a variety of creative expressions, making artwork a clear choice for her. From the study of ceramics to the design of wooden toys, she went to study sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, a field in which she feels she could finally fully realize herself. Her body of work is full of surreal often anthropomorphic figures, sometimes grotesque, emotional and other times macabre. Creation often stems from literature, her inner world, and from her amateur interest in psychoanalysis. Relationships, intimacy, and the effort to capture what's happening within a person are the topics Nikola Emma is working with over the past few years. Artwork often has a therapeutic form in her case. She has exhibited in various places in the Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Belgium, and Australia.
