Nimrod Messeg was born in Israel in 1970; art surrounded him at every turn. His father, Aharon Messeg, is one of the leading Israeli painters, and his mother, Sabina Messeg, a famous poet. This atmosphere has made the artist he is today, self-made, autodidact, not following any other current than the one the metal dictates. When he was thirteen years old, Messeg was already doing stone sculptures and painting. Later on he started working with wood and it wasnt until fifteen years ago that he discovers the matter which will give him the wings for his creations. His sculptures are carried out by the ancient forge technique.
Forging allows Nimrod to explore infinite possibilities, textures and nuances giving a unique, artisanal and unmistakable imprint in every inch of his sculptures. At present days it is very rare to come across an artist like Messeg. With him, the name artist returns to its essence, in which the artist is an artisan. By creating his sculptures by forge each of his pieces are unique and unrepeatable, normally he doesnt do preparatory work, he simply leaves the material to show the way. His first works are more figurative. Through them he does exhaustive studies of gestures, expressions, texturesthey are a search of technical mastery and fusion with the matter. Another theme of his oeuvre is the bull, maybe because of its similarities with the matter he works with; noble, strong and powerful.
Lately Nimrod is experimenting with organic forms, forms that search for balance; purity. Subtle and sweeping forms, that seem to play with the air around them and in which the metal is not only the work matter, it is another element of the final result. Messeg creates though his forge delicate and light forms, free from ties that in theory the metal could impose. Nimrod is constantly searching for new challenges though the possibilities of metal, his themes, carrying out artworks of great magnitude or introducing new technologies in his creative process.
