About The Artwork

This is a real Statement Piece! Perfect for home or commercial space! It will take up some real estate on your wall! It is Bold! The colors are of beautiful wood tones and it brings some warmth to your typical white walled spaces. I consider my Whales to be Folk Art. Letting the wood tell the story. Inspired from Whale Watching in Glouster, Massachusetts. It is amazing how big these creatures are and how close the boats can get to them. We had one swim under our boat towards the end of our trip. I felt I could have reached out and make contact. It was unbelievable! I had a repair man, originally from Brazil, doing some repair work at the studio when I was finishing up this piece. He spoke very little because English was his second or third language and was not very good at it, but he became so overwhelmed with emotion upon seeing the Whale, although struggling, he forced himself to tell me that it reminded him of his hometown in Brazil and was texting photographs of it to his mother whom is still living there. He was almost in tears he was so happy to share that with his mother. The wood used was from a fallen tree at my studio in Canton, Massachusetts. The wood has some spalting, which is a desired natural pattern in the wood that is caused from fungi at the beginning stages of decomposition. The wood was rough sawn and air dried for two years before I started sanding and cutting.. The top edge of the Humpback Whale is mostly a live edge from mouth to tail with some bark on the top of the snout (I'm sure not a whale term) and head. The eye is fabricated from some recycled items that could have washed up with the surf, an old grinding disc and a discarded knob from a propane tank. These items just naturally blend in with the rough sawn lumber and tell the story of the whale's eye. A white wash stain was applied to the lower edge to mimic the white under side of the Humpback Whale. The woods natural coloring is beautiful and was brought out with a clear finish of Danish Oil. An eye catching design style that will fit or compliment most interior design schemes; Modern, Minimalist, Boho, Shabby Chic, Farm House, Antique, Craftsman, Flea Market Chic, Recycled, Upcycled, Mid-century Modern, Scandinavian, Restoration, Pre-loved. This is for indoor use. It has a wire fastened on the rear to hang on a nail or hook. The wood is over 8 feet and naturally has a sway to it, but it hangs beautifully as seen in the photos.

Handy and creative. I build things that I want in my world and sculpture is a good label for what comes of that. I have worked in most mediums, but presently wood and metal preoccupied my time. I live in Southie, South Boston, MA and have a studio just south in Canton, MA
