The eponym for this sculpture is the Assel or slater (Latin Isopoda), a crab that curls up in danger to a ball. Characteristics of the slater are the overlapping shell segments. Similar overlaps can be found in this sculpture by Christian Schmit. Firmly connected to the pedestal, this work is reminiscent of a fossil exhibit.
