The observation of socio-political developments in the world, and especially on the African continent, has made me more critical, direct, and truthful in my artistic work. My series of paintings, sculptures and installations entitled “One-eyed” highlights the hidden side of the continent that is exemplified by the narrow-mindedness of the political elite who hinder the development of the continent. At the same time, I seek to rationalize the euro-centric perspective of Africa. My contemporary works, which integrate materials rich in the values, cultures and traditions of our ancestors, are intimate and surprising. In my works I utilize objects that had been deemed to have reached the end of their usefulness. I give them new shapes and forms, and in so doing give these objects a new life which is theirs. This can be seen in my sculpture titled “Without my spoon”.
