ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In 1999 I made a wall hanging with a horizontal baroque wooden frame. I took it from a so-called kitsch couch. The leftover legs were standing against each other in my studio. I saw a sheep in them. The Museum of Natural History in Leiden had asked me to make an exhibition on three floors of their new building to show the ongoing inspiration of nature upon artists. The first 5 sheep were exhibited there in 2000. The dreads are spun by me. A long and intense craft process. This process is a metaphor for crafts in the history of mankind. We are spinning for over 10.000 years. Sheep give us the wool and we can make many items out of it, so we are able to migrate if necessary for different reasons. It is my way of gratitude to these animals who don't ask much, are very easy to keep and can stay outdoor in wintertime. At this moment I am finishing the last two sheep. When they are finished the flock constists out of 54 sheep and lambs. Many of them already found their way to companies or private collections and are no part of this flock anymore. In 2021 I wrote a script of 29 minutes about this last flock on earth: 'The last flock and mankind'. It’s a video and spoken story. It’s a story about sheep and men in history, but also a fairytale. At the same time, it is a warning about what we do to animals and nature. I live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Reconstructed parts of furniture, tables, couches and chairs are colorfully ornamented with eastern beauty. They stand or hang. Are they only parts of baroque furniture or do they have a deeper power? They refer to wealth and status but also ugliness and kitsch. These are strange but familiar objects that appear to have a place in another world. A new meaning and status arises in these sculptures made of used and unimportant objects. In the photographs the chapters of life move between suffering and beauty. The different forces of nature and culture become tangible and visible.
