Art Description

Sculpture: Paint, Wood on Wood.

I am completely obsessed with taking old things (In this case a 60 year old queen Anne style cherry table) and turning it into something modern. I love the combination or wood and flat painted panels. The juxtaposition of the organic and warm wood grain with sleek modern and quite angluar lines creates something similar to what the Mid-century modernists achieved and what is still popular in Scandinavian design. I like my pieces to feel at once modern but in a retro kind of way. Perhaps they were futuristic at one time, but in today's digital age, they are a nod to the futurism of the past. I want Apollo to make the viewer think about the past through the warmth of the wood, but also look ahead to what the future may hold. Either way, I feel Apollo has an inherent strength and heaviness to it. Like the door or hatch to a fortress which provides safety and security in an uneasy world.
