ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have always wanted to make a piece of work which celebrated the work of the singer songwriter Green and his manifestation in the 80s Pop charts as Scritti Politti. Almost the last lines and the tittle of his song 'Lions after slumber' is a quote from Shelly's poem The Masque of Anarchy. The post punk wave of more thoughtful music and lyrics opened doors to other art forms from other times, something which helped my generation to read, research and question the structures around us. Green's music was a softer and more beautifully slight take on life. This work is a miniature and could be overlooked as animals often are in a world of loud advertising and politics. Animals are often quoted in poetry and music, as metaphor and referent. In practical terms this work is based on a green plastic lion from a charity shop, covered in oil paint and attached to a found wooden base. I use the term humanimal to refer to my practice, which is concerned with the strange and ever changing relationship between animal and humans. No animal products were used in the making of this piece, it does have a front and a back, as you can see from the pictures there is more of the original lion to see from the back. Now sold to a collector in Cornwall.
