About The Artwork
This piece is one of an ongoing series of mobile-stabile fabricated steel pieces. These works are primarily inspired by the advanced technology which was part of my life as a scientist/engineer. This inspiration is mostly evident in the details of the design and engineering of the piece. I wanted the piece to look scientific and technical. To an extent, the piece is a commentary on the dominant interest in consumer technology. In the end, much of it is worthless. The title, Moonbeam navigator, alludes to the absurd function of this big, fancy piece of technology. Nevertheless, I hope viewers connect with this piece primarily because my aim is always to create beautiful objects. This piece is anti-mass sculpture: I want to fill space with minimal elements: steel tubing, stainless cable, and lightweight mobile elements. The holes in all the components aim at reducing the sense of mass. Fabricated steel (machined, cut, welded, formed steel tubing and sheet) is a very plastic medium in my studio practice--I can do anything with it. I create my own paints and color finishes. A strength in my studio practice is design. The mobile elements in this piece move on precision circular knife-edge bearings of my design.

I’m a mid-career artist who makes abstract sculpture. I’ve been practicing studio art since the 1960s. I was strongly influenced by early exposure to Modernist sculptors including Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, and George Rickey. In parallel with my studio practice I maintained a professional career, first as a medical scientist investigating human blood cells, then as a research and development engineer creating devices to treat cardiac arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, and aortic aneurysm. I retired from that career path a few years ago to devote all my time to sculpture. My work is informed by the advanced technology industry of Silicon Valley (where I was employed), and molecular biology and biomedicine. My sculpture deconstructs technology and the world of living cells and molecules.
