My Pangolin Story No 3 Sculpture

This piece of art is part of a group of three which I started when the COVID pandemic struck central Europe. The moral ambiguity of the work: When facing global events, questions of guilt or innocence, of good or bad always challenge our sense of moral. People start looking for someone to blame, avoiding to reflect on one‘s personal behaviour. A scapegoat offers the easy way out. But truth can be one-sided. There is the way I see it, the way you see it and the way we both don‘t see. Good and bad can swap places depending on one‘s point of view. And sometimes there is not only black and white, right or wrong, but also grey. The pangolin, supposedly the origin of the COVID virus, is made of wool, covered by hundreds of hand cut and hand-sewn woolen scales. Stuffed like a cuddly toy is seems harmless. One tends to find it cute, maybe wants to touch or cuddle it, retreating one‘s hand insecurely as it is a piece of art, displayed on a pedestal. Is it ok to feel a liking for it, even if it stands for millions of fatalities? Or, do I have to pity it, show sympathy for it, feel ashamed for the people who caught it for its meat? Curled up its scales protect the pangolin, forming a circle that reminds us of the neverending circle of life. Or is it a vicious circle that we are looking at? 100 % pure wool. Polyfibre stuffing.
