About The Artwork

NIN.TI was a Goddess in the Mesopotamian mythology, a daughter of the great God AN.U, the Almighty among the Gods; her name means “Lady of Life”; she implemented the order of the great Sumerian Gods, “to fashion the Adam in our image and after our likeness” (Genesis 1, 26); in the land of Sumer she gained the epithet of MAM.MI, a word which is still there in every language of the world. The framework of the sculpture consists of one half-body female mannequin supported by an iron rod; its torso and neck have been cladded with sailing ropes to fashion the upper garment; the head has been made up using wooden roots surmounted by big eyes made of sailing ropes, which allude to the scientific capabilities of the Goddess, who was able to investigate and replicate the secrets of life, thus creating a new human being – the Homo Sapiens - as an upgrade of the existing hominids; the lower part of the body is made of suitably shaped plastic sheeting covered with rough fabric; at waist level a large volute made of sailing ropes hints at the DNA double-helix structure; finally the whole sculpture has been painted and bright varnished. My name is Luciana Chiusole, but I have also an artist’s name, Bezec, that was my father’s nickname. I have always been seeing in Nature, particularly in the logs, roots and branches of cut off trees, peculiar “forms” – often originated from my reading and traveling experiences – that I try to bring about making up the roots with clay, paper mache and other, to get the shape I have “seen” and eventually painting and varnishing it. Among my recent works, the “Mannequins” series has evolved from this approach, originated from reading about the ancient mythologies when I started “dreaming” of some roots and branches, I had found somewhere, as the distinctive features of a specific “God” or “Goddess” I had learned of.
