Oceanscape (Wood Block) Sculpture

The original printmaking project was created in 2011. After printing a 4-color reduction print (edition of 4), the block sat in my studio taking up space. In traditional print making practice the original plate or block is destroyed after an edition is printed from it. I find the original wood block a beautiful sculptural piece in its own right. By cutting the block in to pieces and re-assembling it I’ve destroyed the block and also made a new piece. This technique was inspired my father’s wood-working projects He would use salvaged wood, cut it in to strips and create elaborate patterns. The idea to creatively destroy the original block came from a conversation with my dad.
