Oculus II came about after I became (slightly) obsessed with Frank Stella and his groundbreaking wall sculptures. I love working on wall sculptures due to the 3 dimensional aspect of them and Frank Stella has always been an inspiration to me. However, I wanted to actually do some work that was in the same artistic vein, without copying his genius specifically. So after months of studying his work and methodology, I began to work through an entire series of wall sculptures that give my personal artistic nod to the master. This series of unique pieces tap into my love of minimalism, modernism, geometric based art and of course cubism in a very Stella type way. My goal for Oculus II and the Series was to offer extremely clean and modern artwork that stands on it's own, without the need for a subject or object. To me this is the essence of non-objective art. I wanted these pieces to be amazing because they simply "are" from a design and color standpoint, not because they are trying to simply replicate an object in the world. Design and specifically minimalist design has the power to do this and when it is finally achieved, you stand back and just know that is right. People constantly ask me, "What is it" or "I see this in it". I am not sure why people always feel the need to make a work "be something", as again, good abstract art and design can simply stand on it's own. That is what I try to achieve in the pieces I created for this series, including Oculus II. The piece was created using very fine brushes and rollers, to minimize any brush strokes. It is Acrylic on MDF composite board. The result is a very fine almost matte, modern finish. All sides are finished and the piece stands out about .25 inches from the wall (Designed the backing this way), so that it "floats" on the wall. It is wired and ready to hang. Note: Oculus II is very dark blue, white and teal. There is no black in it. Custom colors and sizes can be commissioned.

Scott Troxel draws on the aesthetics of bygone technology and the forward-looking designs of the Atomic Age and mid-century modernism to make dynamic, retrofuturist wooden sculptures that evoke nostalgia for the past as much as they look to the future. Fascinated by the way pieces of technology, culture, and design reveal their age, Scott aims to make works that cannot be pinned to a specific era. Scott has exhibited his work at numerous fairs and exhibitions across the United States, including The Other Art Fair New York, and his works are held in private collections across the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America. As a purely abstract artist, I explore form, line, color, shape, texture and mass. Since I am usually not relying on a recognizable object in my work, I create through the process itself. I start out with a sketch or design and work through the creative process, hands on. My pieces always take several weeks to finish as I constantly change them, until they just feel right. I really like to give my pieces a feeling of juxtaposition and a balance of opposites, in terms of textures and materials. For example, I will combine a recycled 60 year old cherry table top with a piece of modern manufactured Azek decking. The ideas of young/old, past and future, modern versus outdated, technology, nostalgia and futurism all seem to find a place in my work. I also believe this ties into a distinctly human theme. For example, you can pinpoint a person’s age by the technology they grew up with (Black and white TV, Rotary phone, landlines, etc.).
