From the series titled ‘Paper Aviary’, this minimal and dimensional mixed media work has a feeling of captured motion. An aviary is an enclosure for keeping birds. Made while under the restrictions of home quarantine, perhaps this body of work is an unconscious document of how we find ourselves feeling right now. The folded paper motifs appear frozen in a state of opening or closure.

Composed of my custom marbled paper and reclaimed birch plywood, it is at once graphic and subtle, colorful and raw, dynamic and sculptural, geometric and playful. The piece is dimensional and tactile in that the figure is raised and floating slightly above a cloudy cool gray background and is finished under a layer of encaustic wax.

Encaustic art involves fusing heated beeswax and damar resin on the surface of the substrate. The results are a soft, barely opaque, molten surface full of nuance and character that catches the light. ⁣Beeswax encaustic is very archival. Care for an encaustic painting as you would any fine art painting.

Signed on the back, and ready to hang on a sawtooth hanger, or can be framed by the collector.

Jamie Gray is an abstract artist, living and working in Denver CO. Gray has exhibited in galleries & art fairs in the U.K. & the U.S, had work commissioned for museum shops in London & Kansas City, had work included in hotel collections in NY & Miami, and sold to collectors in Australia, England, Europe, and the U.S.  “Jamie creates paintings that are both geometric and primordial” – Aurora Garrison, Saatchi Art Curator The artist’s work can be described as a novel mix of geometric abstraction, minimalist & nature-inspired motifs, hand-rendered pattern & texture, and craft-based techniques such as encaustic wax, woodworking, gilding & paper marbling. Gray studied photography and graphic design. This educational foundation, plus time spent teaching and practicing design, deeply underpins her aesthetic choices and creative processes. “It is said that all life on earth is created from the matter of long-dead stars. Through my art, I'm interested in making contemplative moments for interior spaces that subtly reference some of the creative forces behind our natural world. The shapes I see in my environment — from pebbles to prairies, feathers to forests, mushrooms to mountains, crystals to clouds — provide me with a constant source of inspiration. Ultimately, I’m interested in creating a visual language based on pattern and geometric abstraction that offers the viewer multiple interpretations while also revealing a common thread between diverse subject matter." – Jamie Gray, Artist Statement
