ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work is inspired by wisdom, pathos & the abuse of power. The work is made up as follows. The base is a mahogany bread board salvaged from the sea, upon which stands a part branch of ancient oak supporting an antique metal bird of prey and a head shape construction in stained glass, upon which is a dried piece of blackberry bramble. Leaning against the figure is the stock of a rifle with a glass barrel, which has a vanity mirror at its end. At the foot of the ancient Oak is a small figurative carving which humbly echoes its dominating neighbour. The initial working titles for this piece were 'The Blessed & the Beast' or 'Beauty given the bird', which is suggestive of fortune flown over by misfortune, wrong-doing & well meaning & the endless paradox of wise thoughts & war games. Poetically speaking, it seeks to represent the wonder & the thunder, the sharing & the plunder, the tidy peace & the messy pieces of humanity. Ultimately, it questions the endless dangerous game of contradiction on a grand scale & the crazy waste of wisdom as a consequence.
