About The Artwork

The worship of fire in the form of deities is very common in ancient civilizations since fire is the source of life in many ways. The duality of life and death, volatility and fertility, destruction and resilience are all embodied within the figure of Pele. In Hawaiian religion, the volcano goddess has become a symbol of power and resilience. Pele is synonymous with the island itself and stands for the fiery and passionate nature of Hawaiian culture. As the creator of Hawaii, her fires and lava rock are not only a symbol of destruction but equally a symbol of rejuvenation and the cyclical nature of life and death. I chose marble from Iran as it has the most vivid red for the sculpture I created. The sculpture can be positioned in a number of different posses to either show the deity resting or freeing herself from the rock in a dynamic way.

The sources of stone he has prospected for himself in a search of materials which allows him the greatest range of artistic expression and freedom. Leslie Dycke's art has been displayed internationally from Vancouver British Columbia, to London England, Tokyo Japan and Managua Nicaragua. His unique works can be found in banks, hospitals and numerous private and corporate collections. The artist was born in Abbotsford in 1955 where he grew up in an entire household of artists. Father, mother, brother and two sister's who themselves are all artists in their own right. He credits this early influence of an artistic environment and family for developing his own interest in sculpture later on in life. After attending the University of British Columbia and working towards his degree in Mathematics. Leslie traveled for several years, backpacking throughout the United States, South America, Asia and the Middle East. Working at various odd jobs along the way to support himself and to allow him to keep traveling. He returned to Canada and now resides in Mission, B.C., with his wife Laura and daughter Sarah. I strive to be the best artist I can be through constant study, research, order, knowledge, and skill and through all that I learn from those around me. It's always my goal that the world enjoy my creations as much as I enjoy creating them. nightowlstudio.ca
