Portrait of Don Quixote Sculpture

I began this work, “Portrait of Don Quixote” at the same time as I began carving the horse’s head “Rocinate”. They are intertwined in my mind and became inseparable. This portrait is carved from two pieces of fossilzed wood, part of a tree that was buried in a field for thousands of years. Also out of this wood, I created “Rocinate”, Don Quixote’s faithful horse. This work started in the 1990’s, when living in the area where this wood can be found. Over the years, I have re-worked it, until I now feel it is ready to leave me. Sitting on a plaster (herculite) base, the two pieces fit together easily and is part of my Bog Oak series of works. It’s form is influenced by sculptor Jacob Epstein’s “The Rock Drill” (sadly destroyed), but it’s soul belongs to my interpretation of the fable that is, Don Quixote. This wonderful medium is rare, and its color is natural, the wood is as hard as granite
