Luis Benolier is a Madrid-based photographer and sculptor with a scientific background in biochemistry and molecular biology. More than two decades ago, he shifted from the laboratory to the ocean, becoming an underwater photographer. Born in a city on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, this sea has profoundly shaped his vision. Over the years, his practice has expanded from underwater photography to portraiture, architectural studies, and fine art, resulting in an extensive archive now available as fine art prints. This body of work reflects his way of seeing the world—through the lens, whether in the studio or out in the open. Benolier’s photographic collages arise from capturing fragments of different places, sometimes separated by thousands of kilometers, and recombining them into new visual contexts. By reuniting disparate elements, he creates images where distance and difference dissolve into a poetic whole. The kind of unconscious challenge of using recovered material is remarkable in his sculptural work . Collecting found materials—mainly wood and paper—from the streets of various cities, he allows them to rest in his workshop, often for years, before they take shape. Through this patient, intuitive approach, materials are reborn, transformed into figures and forms that carry both memory and imagination with a pinch of magic.
