About The Artwork

Reformation is a series as a result of a study with blown glass and colour. Influenced by watercolour and abstract painting, I consider these works as abstract painting with glass.

Laura Nolan is an Australian born emerging artist based in Sydney. Recently commencing research candidature for Masters of Fine Arts at the University of Sydney College of the Arts. Nolan works with hot glass as a predominant medium within sculptural installations her work also expands to the digital with photo media and video. Nolan is a finalist in the National Emerging Glass Artist Prize 2018, a finalist in Clyde and Co Art Awards 2018 and a finalist in the Greenway Art Prize 2018. Nolan’s practice incorporates a diverse range of disciplines expanding the field of sculpture. Nolan is passionately motivated to make art in response to current social, political, spiritual and environmental issues. Orchestrated Agency, is a material investigation into blown glass. These works were created using a process involving multiple techniques and elements, which each act as agents in the forming of each piece. This body of work was a practice-led exploration of beauty, experimenting with glass as a form of expanded abstract painting. The blown glass objects are material traces of a methodological commitment undertaken as part of my honours research in 2017. The material vitality is evidenced by the flows and tendencies within the material objects and the digital video and photographs. These material and immaterial agents enter into a composed dialogue. The research concluded that beauty is experienced through the interactions with the material and exists in the space of making. This body of work is also an experimentation with sculptural form. The material was moved, and I was equally moved by the material. This orchestration of agencies, created objects which are traces of the devotional practice.
