About The Artwork

This artwork is a treatise on the current climate crisis. The artwork features the causes of global warming as well as the effects and also suggests some of the things we can do to help. Causes of the climate crisis include the burning of fossil fuels: the artwork depicts a traffic jam of cars and illuminated trade routes map of the world as well as depicting coal, oil and gas. Deforestation (shown as tree stumps) compounds the problem, since cutting down trees reduces the capability of the forests to absorb excess CO2. Eating meat also contributes to increasing levels of carbon dioxide and this is represented by the black and white fresian cow motif. Effects of the greenhouse effect are: Warming of the ice caps and melting of glaciers resulting in loss of habitat, illustrated by the swimming/submerged polar bear. Extreme weather also occurs, illustrated by the hurricane and flooding. Reduced resources causes fighting and ultimately, war, illustrated here by the bombed and bullet-hole riddled wall. Solutions to the climate crisis are represented by the silicon solar cell powered aeroplane and the renewable energy resources: the multiple mirror solar power-station and the hydroelectric power station plus wind turbines. This artwork is intended to make you think. It is made from reclaimed and recycled PVC and the materials used are often found or recycled. This artwork has a significant 3D quality, however it could be mounted vertically on a wall very successfully. Securing screws can be driven directly into the PVC base which is about 1inch thick.
