About The Artwork
This hand fan with baroque embellishments was created by Nazli Brush, a classically trained Turkish artist currently based in the United States. Nazli first discovered her passion for hand fans during a 2016 trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Captivated by the romanticism and tradition of hand fans, Nazli endeavored to create a series of these striking artifacts incorporating design motifs from throughout history. Blending period techniques she learned during her studies in Istanbul with traditional European designs, each of Nazli's hand fan creations are truly unique artworks. Hand fans in this style are no longer a part of daily life; they are something usually seen only in museums. The artist wants viewers of this artwork to feel a true connection with the history and beauty of the baroque period.

Nazli Akcicek Brush is a Turkish multi-disciplinary artist working on a variety of artworks, from hand fans, to miniature illustrations, to digital works. After completing her education, she moved to the United States where she continued her art career. Nazli currently lives in Ohio. Her work has been exhibited in both Turkey and the United States, and some of her artwork remains in permanent collections in Istanbul. Her recent works explore Ohio’s historic architecture through the lens of her art education in Turkey. In addition, Nazli has a years-long interest in hand fans, having researched the history of hand fans in both Western and Eastern culture. In 2016 she designed her first hand fan, and has continued to develop this artwork series, designing each unique fan with ornamentation and patterns particular to different points in history.
