This is a recent saggar-fired stoneware jar fired in the raku style. Saggar means container. The pot is placed inside another clay vessel with some materials that react with the clay and affect the color and patterning. It is fired outdoors in a raku kiln that reaches 1700 F and allowed to cool slowly. Materials like salt, sawdust, and copper are added inside the firing container and subjected to the heat to create a vapor atmosphere. The surface has a smooth satin finish with a micro-crystalline wax to protect it.

I knew at a early age that art was really at my core. It came out in drawing mostly, but as a shy kid, the attention I got from it when I received feedback was what fed me and gave me that much needed confidence that I lacked. I struggled with career decisions when I got to that age where we are all expected to decide and I took countless aptitude tests to figure it out. The results were always the same....do something creative. I went on to get a degree in fine art, but was still hesitant to commit to it as a career choice where I could truly be expressive. For a brief time I did clay work part time and found it inspiring but other things took over and I put it away. My other work experience has included years in woodworking, graphic design, and photography. Living in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina offers endless inspiration to fuel my passions in both clay and photography. More work can be viewed at so feel free to browse and take a look.
