ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sedimentary rocks are formed by the junction of debris, called sediments, arising from the fragmentation of other rocks, which occurs in the action of external agents, transforming the relief in a process called weathering. Weathering occurs when rocks and soils wear out, breaking up into countless tiny sediments, such as beach sand or dust. In weathering, chemical, physical and biological processes can occur that are always modifying the relief. In this logic, the work Sedimentary Bodies portrays, through fragmented photographs, printed on rocks, different types of bodies breaking with the dichotomous view between materiality-spirituality, sensitivity-consciousness, feeling-thinking, nature-culture, body-spirit. It is considered that bodies represent identities, historical relationships in dialogue with themselves, with others, with the world, in the world. Therefore, in this work, the body functions as a social symbol, with historical baggage and, when self-recognized by the individual and his or hers, an ancestral symbol. A symbol presented in fragmented photographs that together with the rocks propose an awareness of the body that is, always has been, an instrument of struggle and social transformation. The choice of the name sedimentary bodies makes a connection with the process of formation of sedimentary rocks because our bodies in the world in their social relationships, have constant experiences with other bodies. These experiences are the junction of wear, breakage, sediments and debris that form this body, which can be compared with the formation of rock that breaks, wears and becomes different sediments from these natural relationships. In this work, sedimentary bodies occupy another space in the rock. The spaces of the rock merge with the features of the body. There is a dialogue between the rock body and the human body. Body and rock become one, with their particularities, but having as their axis what is life itself.Rock bodies are lives in struggle for their territories historically denied through a structure of power, knowledge and being that imposed a Eurocentric and hegemonic model standardizing territories and bodies towards social, racial, gender, peoples and natures, among others. Therefore, sedimentary bodies multiply (or pluralize) tracking the world itself in some way, proposing an intervention-thought and tracking our spaces. Tracking counter hegemonic spaces. Tracking in some way the world itself, suspended by its spatiotemporal, geo-political, nature-culture and individual-social being bases and built here in expanded fragments of our existence.

My name is Anna Menezes, I live in Brasilia in Brazil, I'm 25 years old and I'm an artist, photographer and researcher. My work started with photography, which is composed, most of the time, in the street and in everyday encounters, I am driven to photograph by the passion of observing people and situations, being and human interactions. From photography, I developed a work in which I start from concerns about what could be the movement in the static object, where I produce results from the transfer of photographic film to concrete, in a transformation from two-dimensional photography to three-dimensional object. My work as a whole seeks to break the negative imagery and prejudices, as well as other looks at bodies: black; of the woman; of LGBTQI+ community; peripheral subjects and; finally, from the Cerrado. Everything that is historically seen in a negative and undervalued way, my work sharpens and expresses beauty. My idea is to contribute to a different reality, awakening in the public the pride of being Cerratense and of being Brazilian.
