ABOUT THE ARTWORK

“Silverback” is hand carved from a large, single piece of English oak and stands approximately 54 cm in height. This sculpture makes a feature of the natural, weathered nature of a fallen tree that has been exposed to the British elements for a number of years. These features include the beautiful “silver” sun bleached outer layer of sapwood (inspiring the piece in the first place), that has been left untouched, as well as the gnarly splits and fissures which add power to the finished sculpture. The base is made from patinated 1/4 inch steel plate. “I have been wanting to carve a gorilla bust for some time now. In fact, ever since spending time in Congo (nearly 30 years ago) and getting very close to the lowland gorillas that try to live in the rain forest there – I’ve just been waiting for the right piece of wood to present itself to me. Then, around 5 or 6 years ago, one of the large oak trees growing near to my studio, was struck by lightning, split in half and fell over. There it has rested, being exposed to the full spectrum of the British weather, until early in 2018. It was then that I noticed that the surface of the oak, after the bark had fallen away, had been bleached to a wonderful silver colour. That, and the contours of one particular area of the trunk was all the inspiration I needed to design and carve “Silverback” as soon as I got the opportunity.”

SHIPPING AND RETURNS
Delivery Time:

Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I live and work in Kent, in the UK and have been a full time sculptor for over 20 years. My first career was working with animals, and this still has a large impact on my life and work. I spend quite a lot of time carefully selecting the medium for my sculptures that will best produce the effect I want to achieve. Maybe this is by the use of the figuring in the grain of a unique piece of timber, or perhaps by utilising the striking effect achieved with the contemporary medium of plywood. Sometimes the smooth effect of bronze is the best way to portray an idea. I am self-taught, although I have spent much time talking with and exchanging information with carvers and artists from all over the world. My works are also produced in limited edition bronze and silver. I am a professional member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (part of the Federation of British Artists).
