ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The piece was carved from a slice of a Deodar Cedar tree that was roughly 85 years old. After carving the piece was torched to give it the black color and a leathery texture, and then it was sealed to an even matte sheen. The piece is about the passing of time, and the plight of our natural environment, especially here in California where we have had to deal with so many wildfires. To me the undulation of the shape is reminiscent of the space time continuum, the warping of space. I like the idea of a physical natural piece representing a concept of physics in this way. The wood piece itself weighs about 75 pounds and the steel welded base on which it rests is also about 75 pounds.

I'm a misplaced New Englander who moved to California 30 years ago and am living and working in the Oakland hills on a ranch surrounded by trees, goats, bees and chickens. My sculpture work with wood utilizes local urban tree fall - often trees that have been cut and milled on my own farm. The realities of our changing climate definitely serve as an underlying theme in my work. The work with rounds concentrate around ideas of time, aging, mortality and wildfires.
