Stretch No.2 Sculpture

This wood form is from the "Symbiosis" concept line. I often use simple names for my pieces because I hope they reflect fundamental aspects of nature. They are visual poems. The elements of curve, line, mass, contour, proximity and negative/positive space are the words of the poem. The sculpture is finished smooth and is soft to the touch. It is a tripod sculpture standing on 3 feet. I carve the different parts so that they interact visually with the other parts. I pay close attention to the details of the form in order to achieve delicately subtle relationships. I take lines and curves from the environment and use them to create a whole form made up of parts which are engaged in some sort of energetic interplay of space. I start by selecting the wood based on the colour and grain orientation. I then block plane by hand each surface to be glued together. The surface must be perfectly flat so I use a high precision square to check. Once the pieces are laminated together, I start sawing and chiseling out the main waste. From there I continue chiseling and carving away the rest of the waste until I am ready to use a knife to fine tune the piece. The wood is a local species from the west coast of Canada.
