Stained Glass comes alive in an outside space by reflecting light as well as projecting colour. This stained glass panel was designed and made by me as one of five experiments into how by adding movement the surprise and delight from seeing stained glass outside can be taken to a new level. It was installed as part of the Raveningham Sculpture Trail in Norfolk, UK during August 2021. Each of the 42 segments of glass are either iridescent, textured, translucent or opaque and would make a lovely ornament on their own, but when combined together in this strong, brick like layout the panel is very strong and whatever the light conditions at least one of the glasses will be performing. Hence the name "Stronger Together". The panel measures 1 metre by 20cm. It essentially hangs on a 1cm diameter, 1.5 metre long, marine grade stainless steel rod and a ball bearing. Two short lengths of copper pipe, which are soldered to brass plates, have been inserted into the lead on the back of two sections of opaque glass making them invisible from the front. The panel hangs on the stainless steel rod via the two copper pipes. The top one of these has an end cap at the top into which a ball bearing is placed as the panel is slipped over the rod. 53cm of the rod is behind the panel and the bottom 40cm of the rod needs to be in the ground so 57cm is visible and the total height of the panel mounted on the rod is 1.57 metres. The panel is edged with 5mm marine grade stainless steel rod. Normally a stained glass panel of this size needs a substantial frame with legs to hold it in place when installed outside. The panel moves in windy conditions meaning it offers little resistance to the wind. The stainless steel rod needs to be tilted just slightly towards the direction you want the panel to face when it is not windy. A piece of wood with holes to help anchor the stainless steel rod will be supplied with the panel, plus installation instructions.

My name is Peter Wiltshire. I live in Norfolk, England. Born in 1958, I've been making stained glass since 2001 and have been making items to sell since May 2014. I design and make experimental stained glass to hang inside and outside and to plant in gardens. Exploiting the beauty of glass and the weather proofing attributes of lead to display it. I am fascinated with how sculptures, wall art and hanging ornaments made with glass change appearance constantly with the light conditions and angle of viewing. My Garden Art is designed to withstand the non-sterile gallery that a garden is. My Wall Art is designed to be looked at rather than through.
